Welcome to this information site for the courses I am presently teaching at Pierce College. These courses are part of the program offered by the Department of Earth and Space Sciences. The Department offers numerous other courses in Earth Sciences in the fields of astronomy, environmental science, geology, meteorology, and oceanography.

Pierce College is a Washington State Community College located in Lakewood (Pierce County). It serves an area located between south Puget Sound and Mt. Rainier. The campus is close to numerous field trip sites such as Olympic and Mt. Rainier National Parks, Northwest Trek, and the Nisqually Delta.

 | EARTH SYSTEMS SCIENCE (GEOL-107) is an online distance learning couse in natural science with a lab. The course covers essential topics in geology, meteorology, oceanography, and astronomy. It will focus on the connections and interrelationships between these four earth sciences and their historical development. Special emphasis will be placed on examples from the Pacific Northwest. | | | ESSENTIALS OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE (ENVIR-100) is a non-lab introductory natural science course designed to develop the ability to critically analyze environmental problems. The course will cover essential topics in scientific analysis, ecosystems, pollution, population, urbanization, natural resources, and other environmental issues. A required field trip to Northwest Trek Wildlife Park is included. | | | INTRODUCTION TO WEATHER (ATMOS-101) is a study of Earth's atmosphere, including the major elements and controls of weather and climate. The course discussions and labs will cover essential topics in meteorology including solar radiation, temperature, air pressure, wind, clouds, precipitation, and storms. Some environmental issues such as global warming, acid rain, and ozone depletion will also be addressed. |
